Gripped in Blizzards and Ice is not something I moved to Cornwall to Endure I know its all very pleasant for the kids and yes it does make a good Photo but when I can’t get my van off the street to get up to Treliske for my Chemo then things are getting purty damn tricky..

I spent 3 hours clearing the road tonight so I might have a chance to get out tomorrow, used all the rocksalt I had and sat down for a cuppa only to look out the window and see heavy snow falling yet again and covering fast all that I’d done.. then I find that the hospitals have Norovirus outbreaks and they want me with no immune system to go up there at 6am in freezing conditions.. well guess what.. No Way José I’m staying put with my Garden full of Birds including the recent influx of Fieldfares and redwings.

As I couldn’t get the van out yesterday I took a walk over the field by the side of the house to take a few shots of the snow..
The first encounter was a redwing sitting on the lawn and by the stream at the bottom of the garden a Fieldfare was hopping about.. as I got to the field gate it was obvious why as there were hundreds feeding in the field..

They were skittish to say the least so I was quite pleased to have got the shots I did but little chance to get them in flight.

We walked over to Quarry Field and walked the road up alongside of the hill, more fieldfares were along the roadside and in the trees lining the hill..

A solitary Fieldfare watches on as we walked up the lane

Once we’d climbed to the top of the field the view was wonderful over Penzance, snowy fields crowned the town and glowed in the afternoon winter sun. We could even see the snow falling in Bands across Helston Camborne and Redruth and an opbvious massive snowstorm flowing over the mount and marazion.

and in no time at all closer to home in Mounts Bay

We set off to walk across the field ready to start the descent down the hill, which is no mean feat to most but those knowing my condition, and given the fact that I should have been in for chemotherapy today to help with the flare up, I was pretty damn pleased I’d managed as much as I did.
Looking back afforded me the opportunity to grab a rare opportunity of snapping Leanne as she sat on the remains of one of the children’s snowmen being blinded by the low sun but nontheless I loved the shot especiually the vista behind.

A rare chance to catch Leanne resting on a snowman with Penzance and Mounts bay in the background

The views are pretty spectacular from the top of the hill which we normally only look at out of the window of the bungalow, so it made such a change to be looking back for a change.

At the foot of the hill there’s lots of these little wildlife corners but today just a nice snowy scene.

All except this one little fellow throwing the snow about looking for grubs and insects

Another Redwing at the foot of the hill rummaging in the snow

Well it started snowing again so it was time to head back across the field towards home in case it got heavy again (which it eventually did after I’d cleared the road)…
A quick shot across the field looking towards the bungalow… if you squint a bit you can just see the splashbus stuck in the snow outside the house on the right about a third up.. the problem is the river runs at the end of the road right in front of us so if it slides on the ice and doesn’t make the corner it’ll be definately a SPLASH Bus lol..

There was snowman building going on in the cricket field at Paul Cricket Club which made a nice end to the blog and a final look back at the hill from our usual viewpoint and a chance to see where we’d walked on this sunny but Freezing cold winters afternoon…

Well thats the blog for today… hope you enjoyed the walk with us, your comments are always welcomed.. but please lets keep it nice

So that was some week we had a taste of everything weather wise but at least we managed to launch the boat from Gweek on thursday and have a few hours out on the river… Just down past the first creek we came across the first Redshanks I’ve seen in a while.. most of the waders have moved off the beaches these days for the tourist invasion.. these 2 were no exception.

2 Redshanks on the bank

We trundled on down the river to Polwheveral Creek.. there was a wind blowing up the creek which soon chilled the air a little but we headed down the creek to check out the wildlife… there were Redshanks whimbrel sandpipers and curlew to name but a few along with many sea birds such as black headed gulls and little gulls.

The variety of Birds in the creek all gathered together

We moved quickly back up the creek to get out of the wind past Bishops Quay and a little further up the river where we again found the Redshanks… hardly surprising there were so few around our usual haunts.. there were in excess of 50 here in the one spot.. lining the branches of the fallen trees..

We pulled ourselves in and anchored by the tree to watch a couple trying to waterski on the river.. which amused us for a while.. I’ve heard it described as the fastest way to drink salt water and this was definately proving that theory right.. eventually one did manage a couple of short rides which was betterthan i would have done with the pilot of that boat lol.. at one point the skier tried to rapidly gather up the loose rope as the driver let it go slack…

Not the best shot of the skier but it does also show the lovely old Dutch Barge that was moored in the river awaiting its new berth up the river somewhere.. it will no doubt become someones houseboat in gweek before long.

Aidan Joined us on his kayak as we sat there enjoying the evening sun and the Egrets gliding overhead..

We suddenly became aware that the sky was turning from Blue to grey and decided a quick return up the river to gweek was in order and off we went.. watching the skies slowly darken..

We caught sight of the shelducks on our way back and I was a bit disturbed that the small flock of chicks that were there the last time we saw them had dwindled to just the one who set off and flew past us… maybe the rest already fledged but nontheless it upset me a bit…

The remaining Shelduck chick (Juvenile)

We soared past 4 kayakers who were sitting in the middle of the river chatting and finally arrived back at Gweek…
We’d just finished unloading and loading the van when the first drops of rain came… then it got heavier and heavier and it simp[ly poured as we sat drinking tea under the big Splashography brollies at the van.

Then the kayakers finally got back to shore… and Mother was hauled out..

Eventually the rain subsided.. the ducks came out and the sun came back out to make a great afternoon a perfect evening…..

We finished off the evening as darkness began to fall with Duck races ..
and the Ships cat got stalked by the Local Tom but saw him on his way and sent him off with his tail between his legs…

Its always a dilemna what to do on days like this, but with my illness fast catching up on me and already debilitating me I try to make sure i get out for a few hours every day regardless.
In search of the Med Gulls which had been spotted around the Estuary at Hayle I set off to see what we could see.
Up until now they’d eluded me and I only managed to spot them as the flew overhead, but today there he was sitting amongst the grass on the side of the river in all his glory..

had a quick drive down the saltings to have a look and see if there were any more Med gulls around but all I saw were blackheads I’m afraid, still I was satisfied I’d at least got a couple of shots of one.
Nothing much down the saltings with the wind as it was and the rain looked to be fast approaching again, just time to grab the whimbrel and Oystercatcher before returning to the van…

From there we headed back over to the hide on Ryans Field before heading back to Marazion, Not an awful lot about, just the usual Herons and Cormorant a small wren flitting backwards and forwards and a couple more whimbrel and blackhead gulls.

and so finally back across to Marazion to finish off the day with a walk on the marsh..
I tucked myself in by the reed beds as I’d seen a few warblers flitting about, and it wasn’t long that I had to wait before lo and behold up popped a sedge warbler and stayed put for quite a while giving me a fine opportunity to photograph him perfectly.. a good end to an inclement day.

Well the new Outboard arrived today and of course we had to take it out and try it on such a lovely afternoon so we loaded up the boat and stuck the new engine on the back and launched from the side of Newlyn Harbour.

First call of the day was to give the engine a run up to Mousehole and grab an Ice cream… Leanne caught a nice sized garfish and a large pollock on the way and we pulled into the harbour at Mousehole to chill and have an Ice cream.

As we pulled out of the harbour and headed out for the island, Leanne noticed a seal basking on the rocks.. he was unperturbed by our presence and at one point Leanne even got him waving back to her.. he was very tame so we left him to enjoy the sunshine and headed off for Penzance across the bay.
Here’s a few shots of our freindly seal.

We gave the engine a good run across the bay to Jubilee pool and back to Newlyn.. a very enjoyable afternoon with some nice Grey seal shots to boot..

Well I finally managed to Photograph our elusive badger who always managed to dissappear before I got focussed on him up until last Night.

He’s become a regular visitor now to our Bird feeding station, which has fast become a Bird and Badger feeding station since leanne began to put food out for him most evenings.
He’ll visit several times a night just to make sure he’s not left anything or that more food hasn’t been added.

I managed last night to ease open the window which was just above him and get these shots.. incidentally as I’d been previously told, he never faltered with the flash at all.

Having a sniff around

Contented after Steak and cereals with Jammie Dodgers

Well there he is finally, and no doubt now he’s had a taste of Leanne’s Shepherds Pie and Fresh Steak plus Jammie Dodgers, there’ll be plenty more visits from him and hopefully more photo’s.
